Unfortunately for me, I chose to have my dental services at a time that was inconvenient to Dr. Sheldon. You see, right in the middle--yes, while, during, at the same time--of drilling my tooth and correcting a cavity, Dr. Sheldon's cell phone which he had on his person went off. He stopped attending to my dental surgery, and began a chatty conversation. This conversation revolved primarily around festivities held at a fire house. That is, until he became so enthralled with this social call that, without warning, he left the room...for a few minutes to continue this social call. When I chanced out of the room to find where he had gone (after 5-10 minutes of just leaving me there) his secretary at Station Dental in Riverhead thought it was rather silly of him to interrupt my care to take a call. When Dr. Sheldon had completed making his social plans and chatting he chose to return to the room. My mistake was in, aside from having chosen to have surgery at a time which was clearly inconvenient for him, to ask him why he chose to answer his cell and whether or not that call couldn't have waited. He acted like an oaf, a boor, and a 5 year old all rolled into one, and must have thought that I was either deaf or mentally incapacitated when he actually tried to tell me it was "an important call, an emergency". Since he had graced me with at least 3-4 minutes of his conversation before waltzing out, I knew this to be untrue. When I mentioned to him that I had heard his call, that it was of a social nature, and that it revolved around plans for a get together at a fire house, Dr. Sheldon did what any professional would have done--he told me that he would (so kind of him!) finish the tooth he was in the middle of working on, but that after that the other work to be done which had already been discussed--I would be essentially punished for being so forthright as to question the validity of him interrupting surgery to take a personal call--and that he wouldn't perform them. So upset was I at his lack of ethics and professionalism, I filed a complaint with NYS. In a not surprising twist of fate, Dr. Sheldon chose to LIE to the NYS Board of Regents and stated that he "did not take a call". Hmmmm....perhaps was hallucinating? I even took the time to write to the other dentists in practice at Station Dental, thinking that perhaps they'd like to know their colleague takes person calls IN THE MIDDLE OF SURGERY. But, on an equally professional note, I never heard reply from the letter I sent. If you want to be operated on by someone who places personal calls about his plans for the weekend above the needs of a patient; and a person who, if questioned about his ethics, will LIE about what he has done--by all means. It's your teeth.
