My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed. Right after the surgery, the Dr. Smeltzer said he had to go deeper than expected and that my daughter may be in pain. While in recovery, she awoke in a lot of pain. At first, the nurse tried to down play it and say that many kids wake up emotional. But my daughter was crying and then saying that she was in pain, even through the anesthesia fog. The nurse said she'd tell the doctor but he with another patient and no one else in the office was authorized to help my daughter. Once he finally arrived, he numbed one of her sides, again. I asked if he could re-numb the other side too, because of her pain. He was snippy and said, "Of course, she's in pain." Then, walked away. My daughter began to cry more and said the other side hurt, too. I asked to speak to the doctor, again, but was told that he had left to go to the hospital. It had been less than five minutes. Dr. Smeltzer was dismissive and inconsiderate. I know he may do many of these procedures daily, and may have grown callous to the patient's pain, but his behavior today was unacceptable. I'd advise people to go to another practice for oral surgery.

I came here to follow up on my review from two and a half years ago, and oddly, it’s disappeared. I had a HORRIBLE experience in September of 2015. I had my wisdom teeth out at the age of 34. I’ve always heard that the surgery is far more painful, and the recovery longer, the older you are, but I’ve never experienced anything worse in my life. I woke up twice during surgery, and was in an immense amount of pain for weeks following the removal. I returned to the office on multiple occasions, complains of a sharp pain, and sharp feeling “thing” under my gum. I was asked by Smeltzer if I was just trying to get pain medicine. Seriously?! I hadn’t even filled my first prescription for it. I just knew something was wrong. Fast forward to the last three weeks. I’ve been to two dentists and an Oral Surgeon for an awful infection in my gum, and possible Leukoplakia. I’ll be damned if a VERY sharp piece of my wisdom tooth wasn’t left behind, and FINALLY made its way out of my gum tonight. This doctor had zero empathy, and wanted nothing to do with fixing what was wrong. Sad that someone else had to finish his job. Consider yourself warned!!
