My 11 year old son went in for a routine cleaning. The dentist and hygienist were phenomenal, kind, and gentle. He was due for sealants on his back molars. We came back the same day for a second appointment to get the sealants done. Unfortunately, the second appointment did not go as amazingly as the first. We were placed with a different hygienist, Brooke. She told my son he had to breathe through his nose for the procedure, and he expressed to her that he was congested from allergies and it was difficult. She again repeated herself to him he has to. This is where I went wrong. We should have ended the appointment there. She began the procedure of the sealants. I went over to hold my son’s hand as I could tell he was nervous. In the midst of the procedure, he signaled to stop. She ignored his body signals and did not stop. I intervened and pulled my child upright in the chair. At this point, he is red in the face, gagging and gasping for air. We ended the appointment there. Visually ignoring a child’s signals to stop and needing to breathe is unacceptable. After calling the office and letting them know of the issue we experienced, I received a phone call from Brooke wanting to explain the procedure of the sealants. I declined, I understand the procedure. No apology or concern if my son was okay after his experience. We will not be returning.
